The adverse effects of acid-promoting diets are many. Too much acid in the body results in a number of health problems, and increases the risk of disease for the individual substantially. Examples of disease risks associated with acidity include cancer, osteoporosis, GERD, and more.
Since excess acidity essentially promotes these and other diseases in the body, it would make sense that lowering the acid levels in the body would reduce the risk of the same diseases. And this is precisely why the alkaline diet exists.
An alkaline diet is simply a diet that promotes alkalinity in the body instead of acidity. In today’s modern world, consumption of acid-promoting foods is at an all time high. From fast food—which includes fried foods and meat-heavy meals—to commonly consumed processed foods, the American diet has become overtly acid-promoting… and it has done so with some serious consequences.
The prevalence of acid-related disease in the U.S. continues to rise, and it will do so as long as we continue on the same dietary path. We can change paths, however, by changing the way we eat to incorporate more alkaline-promoting foods and fewer acid-promoting foods. (This is what the alkaline diet is all about.)
The foods you might consume on the alkaline diet are generally known for being extremely healthy. Many are considered anti-oxidant rich, cancer fighting, nutrient packed “super foods”.
- raw spinach and other “greens”
- cauliflower
- brussels sprouts
- broccoli
- cabbage
- carrots
- cucumbers
- asparagus
- artichokes
- celery
- peas
- and more…
Other examples of alkaline-promoting foods that you would eat on the alkaline diet are fresh fruits, healthy grains, and healthy oils such as olive oil.
It is probably easy to see how the alkaline diet is also a disease-fighting diet. The foods on which it focuses are some of the best foods for you. It is because of this fact that the alkaline diet also promotes weight loss, better moods, and a general sense of well-being. Simply put, when you eat better… you start to feel better.
I have been a foodie all my life. And guess what gift did I receive in return? Acidity. I have been fond of eating fast food and all the fried food for the sake of its taste. I’m lover of spicy food. And all that summed up in acidity. For sometime, I have been taking some pills which are described by my physician, to decrease the acidity. Being a taste-bud never thought of a proper diet plan. This article has inspired me to try it, as honestly speaking, I don’t like taking pills.
I have heard so much about the effects of having an Alkaline based diet, and I’m intrigued. However, I must admit that changing my diet from the foods that I love to healthier alternatives mentioned, is going to prove challenging to me.
